This Valentine’s Day, Difu Simo chose to celebrate in a different way—by engaging young men in Kilifi County on mental wellness and suicide prevention. With suicide being the second leading cause of death among youth aged 10-24, and over 70% of these deaths occurring among males, it was crucial to have an honest conversation about mental health.
During the session, we sensitized the young men on the risk factors for suicide, including social pressures, financial struggles, substance use, and the stigma surrounding mental health. Many shared their experiences, and together, we explored ways to cope, seek help, and support one another.
The key takeaway? There is no shame in speaking up when going through a challenge. Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. To all the young men out there: You are not alone. Your voice matters. And help is always available.
